About Mirte
Mirte Groos is an anthropologist and visual storyteller. She is especially interested in how people express themselves through art, and how groups and societies use art to reflect their values, as well as a means of inclusion and exclusion. Her projects often explore these themes, such as her research on professional dancers in Cuba and her documentation of hobbyist sculptors.
She is also fascinated by physical and social spaces, as well as social services. For example, during the U.S. president’s visit to Cuba, she explored what happens to a public space when an important outsider arrives and what happens when that person defies expectations by forging their own path. These themes also appear in her visual research on the daily life of a general practitioner: what happens when a doctor steps beyond the expected physical and social boundaries of her practice to go above and beyond for her patients?
Besides photography, Mirte is dedicated to her role as a mother in her Dutch-Cuban family: two boys, one husband, and a cat. They live in Haarlem, the Netherlands, and together they enjoy reading, climbing, visiting theatres and museums, and exploring nature.
